Leak Sauce: is this Sony Ericssons's RIKA?

The folks at USEB (Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog) popped this pic out of what they're calling the "Rika", a G705 clone that Sony Ericsson's apparently set to announce next month. Sadly, what you see is what you get on this one folks, we do know, however, that it's decidedly lovely, silver, and Walkman-branded. Also worth noting is the forward-facing cam, so we'll at least be treated to some 3G, and hopefully some inner bigness in the memory department for the tunes your Walkman should sport. Know that we'll be all over this as soon as we hear more, so just sit tight, OK?

Velocity Mobile launches the 83, naming scheme still boggles

Don't get us wrong, Velocity Mobile's new 83 is certainly a well thought out Windows Mobile 6.1 device, but with its older siblings getting grandiose names like the 103 and 111, they could have broken down and done something different. We guess the low number may be alluding to the lack of the third G, but the quad-band EDGE, GPS, WiFi, 2.8-inch screen, and dual microSD slots -- one for storage the other for maps -- mostly still makes us nod. Price point is set in the $500 range and the launch is scheduled for November this year.

Samsung's Armani 2 Night Effect is well branded, lacks style

Well it seems Samsung and Giorgio Armani weren't happy to see an end to the battle of the designer phone, so here they are again with yet another garishly branded phone. The Samsung Armani 2 Night Effect eschews tech and cool form for a lovely blue wraparound light, quad-band EDGE / HSDPA, 3.2 megapixel camera, FM radio, 120MB of memory with expansion via microSD, and Bluetooth for accessory connectivity. This handset should see the light of day in Europe come November with South East Asia and the Middle East getting their soon after.

BlackBerry Javelin gets photographed, put on eBay

RIM's BlackBerry Javelin hasn't exactly been making itself shy over the past few months, but if you're still not Javelin'd out, you can dive into a fresh new batch of pics courtesy of BlackBerryForums member fr0zen and, if that's still not enough, you can also now buy the very same phone on eBay. Considering that the bidding has already topped the $2,000 mark with six days to go, however, we're guessing most will simply choose to bide their time with the pics available at the link below, which also helpfully includes some comparisons with a few other familiar phones.

Windows Mobile gets location-based searches thanks to Google...

Google search on Windows Mobile -- full list of supported devices can be found by following the read link -- just beefed up local searching with the same tech used by Google Maps for Mobile. By grabbing information about the cell towers near you, searches are tailored to your location rather than you having to enter one. For example, entering "Taco Bell" would find the store nearest you, not all of em in your home town. The service is currently only supported in the US and the UK, but as with everything Google's up to -- like world domination -- it'll show up in your locale soon enough. We're fresh out of Windows Mobile devices today, so feel free to hit us up with your experiences.

HTC's Opal to be launched as Viva?

Remember HTC's maybe-it'll-replace-the-Touch Opal? Well, it would seem if the rumors of this set existing are true -- and hey, they can be -- it'll not be replacing anything if it only features GPRS / EDGE. Specs potentially feature the same 200MHz OMAP CPU, a 2 megapixel camera, no 3G, and apparently TouchFLO 3D, too. No dates, prices, or anything else here, though we'll hopefully hear something either way soon.

Sprint's Touch Diamond, now available

Like they said they would, Sprint just spun the HTC Touch Diamond out for retail. $250 (after $200 instant savings, $100 mail-in rebate, and 2-year contract) takes home this WinMo 6.1 candybar with HTC's TouchFLO 3D salve layered atop a 2.8-inch touch-screen display, 4GB of memory, WiFi, 3.2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, and EV-DO Rev. A. The tough decision is buy now, wait for Sprint's Touch Pro launching on October 19th, or hold-out for Best Buy to get its act together and put the $700 unlocked 3G Touch Diamond out onto store shelves.

Leap wireless to double population covered by 2010

Leap Wireless's Cricket has big plans for the coming months, namely significant expansion. The regional carrier currently umbrellas some 61.7 million people, and it's hoping to up that to 120 million (or 40% of the US population) by the end of 2009. This may sound like a fairly lofty goal, but the company's already doubled once between 2005 and 2007, so why not give it another go round? We're thinking if it keep launching decent sets and crazy, inexpensive, and contract-free plans, why not? Shoot for the moon folks, we love it.

Gemalto embeds DVD-compliant optical disc into WIND SIM card

Movies on flash drives aren't looking like the next big thing, but Gemalto reckons its approach to getting DVD content on smaller surfaces is different enough to get noticed. In an admittedly bizarre release, the digital security firm has announced a new Smart Video Card for Italian carrier WIND, which "embeds a DVD-compliant optical disc into the card body of a regular SIM card." The card can store practically any digital content (including video, software or URLs) and can reportedly be played back on any DVD drive. So what, we buy a new SIM card each time we're looking for a new batch of miniaturized content? Fabulous!

Samsung a837 "Rugby" bows on AT&T, looking for a fight

It's not every day that AT&T launches a phone that meets military specifications for dust, water, and shock resistance -- in fact, AT&T claims it's the first time ever, despite the Motorola V365's street reputation as a tough piece -- so take note, especially if you've got butterfingers or a job that involves rolling around in a mud pit. The Samsung a837 Rugby won't win any hearts with its charming good looks, but it's got 3G data, push-to-talk support, and a 1.3-megapixel camera to take quick and dirty shots of your dangerous endeavors that'd make your average flip beg for mercy. Grab it now for a shade under $130 on a two-year activation.

AT&T's version of the Samsung Omnia actually the "Mirage," c...

We're hearing that AT&T dealers are now being briefed on the upcoming Samsung i907 -- a phone that we'd like to believe will approximate the appearance and power of the i900 Omnia released overseas, though details are still slim on exactly what form its American cousin's going to take or what capabilities it'll offer. Whatever it is, though, current estimates have it available for order on October 7 as the "Mirage." In other words, yes, go ahead and kiss that Omnia name goodbye -- and really, "Mirage" seems like a perfectly fine name, as long as AT&T isn't trying to imply that it disappears as you get close to the launch date. More details on this one just as soon as we get 'em.

AT&T drops push-to-talk pricing to $5, Sprint now odd man ou...

In conjunction with the release of the rugged Rugby from Samsung, AT&T's celebrating its good fortunes by dropping pricing of its push-to-talk option from $10 to $5 (a 50 percent cut, for the mathematically challenged). That puts its rate in line with Verizon's, while Sprint stays the lone ranger up in the clouds at $10 a month. So, you know, if your conundrum comes down to Rugby versus Boulder -- just make sure monthly PTT pricing doesn't come into play in your decision.

Griffin unveils AirCurve acoustic amplifier, Clarifi case fo...

We're not saying a transparent box designed to "acoustically amplify" your iPhone speakers is an unmistakable ripoff or anything, but we do believe your $19.99 would be better spent on materials and beverages of choice as you exercise that DIY muscle. At any rate, Griffin Technology has today introduced the AirCurve (that's the thing we just described) alongside the Clarifi ($34.99; pictured after the jump), a polycarbonate protective case for your iPhone 3G. Unlike alternatives, though, this one has a "close-up lens," which supposedly gives your iPhone 3G the ability to take remarkably detailed macro shots with even "more accurate colors." Call us jaded, but both of these things have marketing hoopla written all over 'em.

HTC's Touch HD gets even more dreamy

While that 480 x 800 pixel display has everybody in a feverish pant, MoDaCo has released even more unconfirmed specs on the rumored HTC Touch HD guaranted to pound a lustful wave of disruption into your handset purchasing plans. To start with, it's listed at 115 x 62.8 x 12-mm making it almost exactly the same size as the svelt 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3-mm iPhone 3G. That's a good start. Now slip GPS, HSDPA data, a 5 megapixel camera (no flash), stylus, microSD slot, 3.5-mm headphone jack, and 1350mAH battery into the mix and you've got the stuff of serious, WinMo fantasy. We'll know if it's all legit soon enough as MoDaCo claims a retail date by Christmas. Yes, really. Only thing missing is WiFi... and Android.

Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 hands-on

Announced in June, the MOTOZINE ZN5 is a pretty humdrum set, but somehow we're liking it's same-as-most-other-motos-look. The handset feels good in the hand, the screen looks pretty spanky -- even if the keyboard feels cheap and seems like it'll wear your fingers down -- and if you're into simplicity, this is likely a winner. While China was the first country getting this set, it seems we may well see it float its way over here after all. For more pics of more angles, follow the link.

Swype finger-tracing text entry seems fast, hypnotic, and ma...

OK, well maybe difficult is stretching it somewhat, but it does look like it'll take some getting used to. Swype's creator is none other than one of the people involved in developing T9 -- which we simply couldn't get by without -- and applies the same concept of quicker typing, with less work. Instead of tapping keys, Swype has you simply trace your finger through the letters you want to use to spell the words. The system will apparently enable even a novice to quickly get up to speeds of 40 words a minute. We're itching to check this out and with the glut of touchscreen sets on the market -- iPhone, Touch Diamond, and on, an on -- we can see this really taking off if it works as well as in the demo. Nothing to download just yet, but we've signed up and are waiting for the word.

Nokia lowers Q3 outlook on tough competition, product slip

2008 has generally treated Espoo pretty well, but every rose has its thorn -- and for Nokia, that thorn might just end up being the third quarter. The company has now revised its Q3 market share estimate downward, now predicting a slip from Q2 rather than the flat line it'd been suggesting before; cited reasons include a "tactical decision to not meet certain aggressive pricing of some competitors," generally fierce competition (particularly on the low end), and the delayed launch of an unnamed midrange handset. In justifying its failure to meet market pricing head-on in every market segment, Nokia says it's only going to play that game where it thinks it's profitable to do so, and for what it's worth, it still expects to ship about 10 percent more devices in 2008 than it did in 2007. What's more, they say they expect to meet the rest of their expected launch dates in '08 -- so it looks like every night has its dawn after all.

i-mate's rumored "Hummer" -- for when you absolutely, positi...

Say, for a moment, that Windows Mobile is Planet Earth; if the Touch Diamond lies somewhere around the North Pole, then we think you'd find this one freezing its ass off down in Antarctica. It's a stretch of an analogy, we know, but it's difficult to express just how different (and by "different" we mean "less attractive") i-mate's rumored "Hummer" is than some of its Windows Mobile 6.1 contemporaries. Granted, it does HSDPA, WiFi, and it's supposed to be ruggedized -- but we're not really convinced that exposed screws were the right way to get that point across. Then again, most of the devices rumored out of the house of i-mate from last year didn't make it to production, and this one may very well not either, so why sweat it?

Symbian Foundation nabs Opera, KTF... UIQ?

The Symbian Foundation has definitely managed to quickly reach a quorum in the few months since its inception, and the group has just announced yet another round of heavyweights to have thrown their support behind the effort. This time around, Sharp, Opera Software, South Korea's KTF, and UIQ are among nine new firms to throw their hats into the ring (in other words, if the Windows Mobile and Android camps aren't paying attention yet, they probably ought to be). UIQ might be the surprise here, considering that S60's perpetual second fiddle had already made moves to get ready for the Foundation's activities -- but whatever, good to hear that they're officially on board now.

Sony Ericsson launching first round of XPERIA X1s on Septemb...

Feel that heat, Touch Pro? That's right -- the Great QWERTY Smartphone War of 2008 is officially gearing up for kickoff now that Sony Ericsson has announced a firm date for the first handful of lucky countries to be scoop up the mighty XPERIA X1. Sweden, Germany, and the UK will be the inaugural launch sites come September 30, with no fewer than 32 more on tap in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America for the fourth quarter of the year. North America, China, Australia, and Russia are also listed as committed launch regions, though dates for those will be announced "in the coming months" -- scary verbiage considering that they weren't even willing to slap the Q4 label there. 2009's a long way off yet, and if there's a Touch Pro in front of us... well, let's just say that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, if you catch our drift.

Hands-on with Sprint's Touch Diamond

You know you love it, new Windows Mobile -- even new carrier is good enough for us -- hardware always gets us all thrilled and chirpy. Sprint's really blown it open today with the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro announcements, so to honor them we got our hands on the Touch diamond. We like this set, Sprint's version in red -- a well chosen, soft and kind red -- is no exception and while a bit husky, we expect it's going to be well accepted and will be finding its way into many pockets come September 14th. Sadly, the Touch Pro was absent at CTIA, but we'll do our best to dig it up before the show closes out. Enjoy the pics.

Hands-on with Samsung's Rant and Highnote

Well, that about covers Sprint's new handset binge at CTIA,and we got hands-on with both the Samsung Highnote (pictured left) and the Samsung Rant to wrap up the announcements. The Highnote's the music centric handset -- isn't there always one? -- in this launch, but sadly, the speaker seems to lack oomph in the sonic delivery department, but the dedicated messaging button's kinda useful. The Rant is built like a tank, and the very solid metal construction is top notch -- so if you're prone to dropping your phone, it's worth checking out. The gallery covers the range of colors that'll be available -- and the purple is a glowing example of ugly -- when these two hit in October. You know the drill, the read link has the goods.

Sony chief ponders aloud over Sony Ericsson's future

It's no secret that Sony Ericsson is a weak point in Sony's vast portfolio right now, underperforming fellow European rival Nokia by many, many points of market share globally. CEO Howard Stringer (that's Sir Howard Stringer to you, by the way) knows it better than anybody, mentioning to German newspaper Die Welt that he's trying to figure out a way to turn the joint venture around or spin it off. He mentions that "buying out a partner is never an easy thing," but goes on to say that if they can't work with Ericsson to turn things around, SE will have to "find its own solution." Those are big words coming from a big man with his finger hovering over a big, red button at all times -- so yeah, it's probably in everyone's best interest to get that X1 shipping on the double, eh?

AT&T serves up Samsung a237

The spec sheet isn't going to widen any eyeballs this morning, but as low-end flips go, Samsung's new a237 for AT&T really doesn't look half bad; then again, maybe we're only saying that because its rounded case and bold lines are a welcome change from the typical anonymity these phones usually suffer. True to its target market, the a237 tops out with EDGE data and a VGA cam, features a passable 160 x 128 main display, and sticks with grayscale for the secondary. It launches today in your choice of black, red, or blue, and rest assured, it's not going to break the bank. Scout's honor.

Cricket adds unlimited video clip package for $5 per month

While the world still tries to decide if its really into mobile TV or not, Cricket is moving forward with plans assuming that she is. The wholly-owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless has just announced a flat-rate unlimited mobile video service that will enable users with "select handsets" to view one-to-four-minute-long video clips for $5 per month. Watching the clips won't tack on any additional data charges, and as for content, customers can look for clips from FUEL TV, Hollywood Insider and an array of other sources. Nah, there's no live TV (yet), but the pricing sure is admirable.

LG PRADA II to include WiFi, even more pretension?

Looks like LG wants some bite to back up the PRADA II's bark -- assuming both the device and its specs are real, of course, since we've been basing everything we know about Lucky Goldstar's rumored fashion monster on rumors thus far. The latest word on the street has the phone packing a what's-what of good things, ranging from a 5-megapixel autofocus cam, wide QVGA display (with capacitive touch, we can only imagine), HSDPA 850 / 2100, motion sensing, an FM radio, and a WiFi radio for those poor US souls who find themselves surrounded by more 1900MHz 3G than 850. It certainly all sounds real enough -- not as revolutionary as the first PRADA may have been, but a solid upgrade. While we're waiting for LG to sort this business out in a slightly more official capacity, we'll be working on the Armani, we s'pose.

Sanyo and KDDI's W64SA brings light therapy to your handset

Anybody who has been on a modern jet during a longhaul flight may remember seeing mellow shades of red, blue, and other calm colors during the trip. Well, KDDI and Sanyo's W64SA is set to do the same, but rather than calmly lifting the cash out of your wallet for senseless duty-free purchases, they're hoping the idea will sell you on this set. The W64SA features Bluetooth, a 2.8-inch LCD, 2 megapixel camera, remote wipe, mobile wallet, and a huge list of software titles you'll never, ever, enjoy over here. The two LEDs on the front will change depending on motion or activity -- Shake Illumi -- and slowly fade out when the set is sitting still -- Illumi Drop. No word on pricing, but if we hear something from KDDI au, we'll be sure to fill the gap. Follow the read link for some nonsensical Google translations of features we only half understand.

Olympics Water Cube-themed cellphone hits China

The Olympics may be over, but it looks like the tie-in products (official and otherwise) are still going strong in China, where this Water Cube-themed cellphone recently made its debut. Of course, apart from that eye-catching design (and slightly unusual keypad), there's nothing too stand-out with this one, with it boasting tri-band GSM connectivity, a 2.4-inch LCD, dual cameras, all the usual media-playing features and, apparently, a "3D interface" of some sort. From the looks of it, the phone is only available from wholesaler Sourcing Gate at the moment but, if you've really got to have one for your Olympics collection, you can order a sample for $175.

Motorola's MOTOJEWEL has a surprising number of vowels

Anyone who's been jonesing for a U9 with a little more style look no further than the MOTOJEWEL, a new clamshell Motorola's bringing to the UK this fall that's being billed as "a phone so sassy that users will wish they could wear it." What then, pray tell, makes it so sassy? Well, that's an open subject of debate -- but we're guessing it's mostly the "3D crystal-cut design" that rings the mirrored Midnight Quartz shell to give it that jeweled look and the "dazzling" purple keypad that you won't find on your garden variety U9. Otherwise, though, the specs are sounding mighty familiar: 2-megapixel cam, external touch-sensitive music controls, stereo Bluetooth, Motorola's CrystalTalk noise reduction -- you know the drill -- and unless Moto pulled a fast one on us and slipped in some 3G, it's likely packing quadband EDGE. Look for this little gem (see what we did there?) as a Carphone Warehouse limited edition exclusive starting in November.

Palm Treo Pro gets props from Telstra for extreme signal str...

For our money, there's really nothing worse than dropping a few hundred bucks on a shiny new 3G toy, taking it home to the Outback, and realizing that we're getting more wallaby meat than we are reception. Happily, Telstra has a pretty unique program in the carrier world -- dubbed "Blue Tick" -- that awards certain devices in its lineup for their killer signal strength, which theoretically makes them more appropriate choices for use in rural and fringe areas where lesser phones might struggle. Interestingly, the Treo Pro is now the first smartphone in Telstra's Blue Tick range -- which they're offering for as little as zilch on a two year contract, by the by -- making it a solid choice for anyone around the world who's looking for a modern WinMo set with enough signal-pulling power to make a Motorola V365 green with envy. Only question is, can we still completely encase it in gold and hold a call?

Vodafone UK welcomes BlackBerry Bold to its ranks

Ironically, one of the very first carriers in the world to leak the Bold's existence way back in January of this year has ended up not being one of the first in the world to carry it -- but they're really not that far off. Vodafone UK has announced the BlackBerry Bold for immediate availability to its throngs of email-loving corporate types (and not-so-corporate types, for that matter), and even better, it's free on a £35 (about $62) plan with 600 minutes of talk time at 500MB of monthly data for two years. Considering that most larger companies are willing to shell out a small fortune to equip their crews with mobile gear, that ain't a bad deal at all.

A Cell Phone Made of Corn

Have you heard of a cell phone that is made of corn? Well, Samsung has just introduced the E200 Eco candybar cell phone. And yes, it is made out of corn!

Even though there is no actual proof that corn-based bioplastics really assist the environment, it is delighting to witness cell phone manufacturers trying their best to help out. Creating another milestone in ecological electronics, the full housing of E200 is fabricated from corn-based bioplastics. And when the battery is already full from charging, the Samsung E200 has an alarm that reminds the owner to unplug the charger.

Amazingly, the new E200 is well built complete with a 1.3 megapixel camera, video messaging, and a fixed MP3 player.
