Garmin Announces GPS-Enabled Nuviphone

Personal navigation device maker Garmin will be releasing a PND phone that could very well be an iPhone killer if the price is right. The Nuviphone (or nuviphone) boasts a 3.5-inch touchscreen and noteworthy features like 3.5G HSDPA connectivity, GPS and built-in video camera that looks as iPhone-killing as any we’ve seen from other touch screen phones. Garmin will be using its own OS with a web browser included. The user interface makes it very easy to access its main features with three big buttons - “Phone,” “Search,” and “Navigation” - right at home page. Besides calling and text, you can email and use instant messaging software. It also supports MP3 and MPEG4/AAC for your multimedia needs. That’s all the information from Garmin for now. Even without Wi-Fi and the choice of a proprietary OS instead of the more popular mobile phone OSes like Symbian and Windows Mobile, Garmin’s reputation in navigation should be enough to make the nuviphone a hot topic. Release date is Q3 of this year.

The zzzPhone is not a concept and the makers do not claim it is revolutionary, unlike some brick-manufacturers we know. What it is is a cheap Windows Mobile Phone that you can order now for a really cheap price. Imagine for $149 you get much of N95’s specs with added touch screen and pre-installed Skype. The standard zzzPhone comes with a 3 megapixel camera but there is an optional upgrade to a 5 megapixel one. It’s like Dell Computers but only applied in handsets, and we all know how great Dell is.

Elite Electronix, Verizon to Sell Meizu...

We just brought you news about the M8 (miniOne) being available through wholesale suppliers. Mere hours later, other leads on the M8’s availability have been popping up. One such lead goes straight to an online retail site, Elite-Electronix, is selling on a pre-order basis a 4GB M8 phone unlocked for $299.95. The specs given on site generally matched those given by the suppliers except for the inclusion of a VGA camera in front for video conferencing and additional 3G and even 3.5G connectivity in a future date. Elite Electronix must be in direct contact with Meizu execs as we haven’t heard fom CEO Jack Wong himself about 3G or 3.5G. A 2/ 4-year protection plan from Elite Electronix can be purchased separately for the M8. The site also says the Meizu will ship March 2008.

Toshiba Shows Very Capable, PMP-Looking...

Toshiba outed its PMP-looking Portege G10 phone at MWC 2008, and we’re seeing a lot to like. The device is equipped with Windows Mobile 6, and supports HSDPA, HSUPA, regular and Assisted GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth.
A 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 3MP camera, microSD slot and FM radio functionality are built-in. The due date is Q2 2008, with Europe as the first destination.

Report on China’s Cloning Industry

Popular Science writer Dan Koeppel went to China for a close-up look at Meizu’s elusive miniOne, also called the M8, but learned about the China’s blooming cloning industry. Everything can be cloned in China, even a Mercedes Benz C-class. China’s copycats have become a lot more sophisticated since they started copying Western products in the Eighties. From imitation Levi’, the Chinese have upgraded their cloning technology to include the most hi-tech gadget, including the Apple iPhone. The technology of cloning in China has gotten so good, they can come out with a perfect copy of a product within a month (and we know this only too well).
Koeppel has noted that Japan and Korea also went through the same stages before being globally competitive on original products. In the Popsci article, Koeppel observes that what is happening to the iPhone right now happened to an LG Phone a few years back. The LG Chocolate is still one of the most copied gadget in China, and elements of its design are seen practically everywhere in the mainland. The article concludes with a rosy picture for China’s tech industry. Eventually the Chinese will be good enough to produce original products and follow in Japan’s and Korea’s footsteps… well, only on a much bigger scale. Meizu miniOne M8 Now for $788.50 Pre-Ord...

The site Negri Electronics is now offering the Meizu miniOne (M8) at a steal for $788.50, a $200 price cut from the month of June when the pre-order availability of the “Chinese iPhone” was announced. Negri Electronics is wishing there are people who hate Apple so much they’d shell out eight hundred buck for an unannounced cell phone. Specs include a Samsung ARM11 533MHZ, 128MB SDRAM, 3 megapixel camera. It runs Windows CE 6.0 and plays AVI, MPEG4, WMV at 720 x 480 resolution @ 30fps. The rumored 3G, HSDPA and GPS connectivity is not here. Negri Electronics promises a rebate when the official price is announced at the end of December 2007. The official release date is on or around January 17, 2008. That’s according to Negri Electronics.

Maxian E900T PMP might be the best thing...

The Windows CE-based Maxian E900T PMP has a snazzy 4.3″ touch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution and it can pretty much play any audio format (including MP3, WMA, AAC, and OGG) and supports WMV, MPEG-2/4, DiVX/XviD, and H.264 videos. It can even support real-time lyrics display for tracks tagged with SYLT encoding!
But nope, that’s not all the E900T can do. You can connect this thing to your TV or home theater system and enjoy its 720p high-def video and DTS surround sound, powered by Burr-Brown processing circuitry. If you’re the type who’s always on the go and not really one to sit at home and be a couch potato, you can bring the E900T with you in the car. It’s got an optional windshield antenna/dock, GPS navigation, a DMB TV receiver that accepts Korea’s digital TV signals so you and your passengers don’t miss your favorite programs.
The Maxian E900T comes with 30GB memory (white) or 60GB memory (black and blue), and has a built in SD/MMD card reader. Like all good things, this one comes with a catch. And the catch is–it looks like it’s available in Korea only.

TV Phones Hit 20 Million in Japan

Japan has reached the remarkable number after only two years of service. The last million handset was shipped during the month of December 2007. Japan’s 1-SEG network was launched April 1 2006 and delivers QVGA-quality broadcasts. OneSeg uses a 416kbps signal and are delivered for free with no DRM protection.

Sharp’s Digital TV Tuner is the smallest...

There already exists 1-seg mobile digital TVs small enough to fit into your mobile phone, but Sharp took things a step further and made the smallest digital TV tuner in the world. The VA3A5JZ922 is about a third smaller than existing models at 5.9 x 5.9 x 0.9mm. And if you know what the dimensions of a penny are, yes the TV tuner is smaller and thinner than that as well. Sharp says that millions of this little thing are going to be produced each month, so it looks like digital TV is going to be a staple of mobile phones in the future. At least in Japan, anyway.

Babiken Sells BI-DTV3200 DVB-T Mobile Ph...

Babiken claims the BI-DTV3200 and we’re not in the mood to doubt them. The truth is that Babiken had a previous TV Phone phone model, the BI-A880, but, they readily admit, it wasn’t very successful outside China because of it tunes into DMB whereas even in China where DMB is the adopted standard, there are too few channels to make people interested.. The BI-DTV3200 is DVB-T, which should be spot on for the European and U.S. market. You can watch DVB-T channels on its big 3.2 (320 x 240-pixel) screen. As a phone, it works on 900/1800MHz networks. TG Sambo (CP-1000), the 4.8-inch iPod To...

TG’s Sambo Windows CE 5.0 PMP has a 4.8-inch 800×480 screen and powered by an RMI AU 1250 to 700MHz CPU. It’s powered like a UMPC with a processor almost as fast as a sub-notebook, matched with a rather disappointing 128MB of RAM. It has WiFi, T-DMB, plays MPEG 1/2/4, WMV, ASF, DivX3.1 1/4x/5x, Xvid 1.0 Video files, MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG. Akihabaranews says it packs 16GB of HDD, but it must be 16GB of flash memory or 160GB of HDD right?
This is a Korean release only priced at 300 euros or $466. I wonder with the screen at 4.8 inches they didn’t think of putting GPS in it. It’s a Korean device after all.

Samsung YP-PB2 Priced and Now With Kicks...

We didn’t know that by adding a DMB/DAB tuner the Samsung P2 is going to gain a nifty kickstand. I’d still go for an antenna that completely folds and vanishes into the casing but the benefit of having a built-in kickstand almost outweighs the inconvenience of having extra appendage. Specs of the PB2 is similar to the P2 except for the added mobile TV and digital radio support. Prices are as follows: 4 GB 239000 won ($229); 8 GB 309000 won ($296), 16 GB389000 won ($372).

Verizon Wireless has just added a new mobile phone in its line-up useful and powerful mobile handsets. We’re talking about the LG Dare VX9700, a non-smartphone that features touchscreen LCD display.
