Game Developers’ Conference: Free Giga Pass or Scholarship?

The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) is now accepting applications for their 2006 Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) Scholarship Program. To be considered for the scholarship, students first need to join the IGDA as a student member at the cost of $30 a year. Once you’ve become a member, simply fill out a basic form and write a few short essays (100 words or less) on several questions–it could earn you a fully paid ticket to the Conference beginning March 20th, 2006.

This is a must-do for any serious gamer whose prospects in life are in the gaming industry. The conference is one of the most prestigious in the world, boasting educational lectures and hordes of fun on the side.

However, there is another way to attend the conference for free. Even though this alternative will most assuredly demand that you work to the sweat, I can assure you that it does not in fact involve prostituting yourself. First of all, apply to be one of the hundred or so Conference Associates (CAs). As a CA, it is your duty to spend 20 hours during the entire conference doing grunt work (think guarding doors, managing lines, stuffing goodie bags, entering information into databases, and other menial tasks). And what do you get for all this work? Quite a bundle:

+ The program’s managers (Tim Brengle and Ian MacKenzie) run a really tight ship. You’ll learn a lot from them.

+ Lunch and breakfast Monday through Friday are included

+ CAs receive full Giga pass privileges ($1325 value) when not on-duty

+ Access to all events and parties including the IGF and Game Developers Choice Awards (part of the Giga pass)

+ Reduced hotel costs by sharing rooms with other CAs

Game Of The Week: Not Pr0n

This browser-based game is an elaborate online riddle. You basically just look at the picture, examine the page information, and use the google when necessary. After you decipher the clues and passwords, simply click on the pic and type them in to proceed to the next level. “Not pr0n” has been active for over a year, but only 82 players (0.0011%) have completed the puzzle, and if that’s not a testimony to its difficulty, nothing is. And of course, the puzzle is absolutely free… so get started.

Neopets: The Cult

Neopets: The Cult

Posted in PC Games, Reviews, Online, Art by ubersoldat on December 9th, 2005. [Del.icio.us]

Slashdot reviews the Neopet craze and reports: “Wired is running an article examining the ups and downs of the Neopet Addiction. The overly cute online ‘game’ mostly consists of teaching kids to look at ads, but somehow has developed a large following online. From the article: “A generation agrees. Neopets has a staggering 25 million members worldwide. It has been translated into 10 languages and gets more than 2.2 billion pageviews per month. These dedicated Neopians spend an average of 6 hours and 15 minutes per month on the site. That makes Neopets the second-stickiest site on the Internet - ahead of Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, and eBay, according to Media Metrix. What’s more, its demographics are the stuff of marketers’ dreams: Four out of five Neopians are under age 18, and two out of five are under 13.” Relatedly, Kotaku has a quick blurb about the Scientology backdrop against which this cuteness is projected.”

Final Fantasy XI beta to be available with UK magazine

Xbox 360 Fanboy writes about the FF: XI Beta and reports: “Good news for people from Her Majesty’s blessed shores. The popular massively multiplayer online game Final Fantasy XI is due for release on the Xbox 360 next year, and readers of the UK’s Xbox 360: The Official Xbox Magazine (or OXM 360 for short) will be able to take part in the beta test in January. A disc is included free with the magazine, which goes on sale on January 5th.

This is a great opportunity to preview what the next generation of gaming will be capable of; however, with the Xbox Live marketplace shaping up to be a solid content-delivery system, it’s a shame the beta will not be downloadable. Beta discs are also being distributed with special Japanese 360 launch packages, but we’ve no word on when it will be available to our American cousins, so this may give them one reason to hate us back.”

Casino Royale In Development For Current Gen

A EA Games mole, whose loyalties clearly lie with Kotaku, clears up the confusion about a possible videogame adaptation of Casino Royale . He says “that the next-gen version of the game hasn’t been delayed, it’s been canceled. However, the development team (I’m told they are in Europe) is still working on an adaptation for the current generation consoles.”

Sunder: Land Of Divide?

Kotaku recently recieved an anonymous email with information about a possible Nintendo Revolution game called Sunder: Land Of Divide. This shooter might be a fake, but even if it is, someone clearly went to a lot of work to con Kotaku.

Here are a few more guns and blades from Sunder: LoD:

Now that we’ve covered the guns and blades, here come the bombs and decoys. The next set of pictures will all deal with something call Nanon weapons, which is explained in the image below.

Considering that this Revolution title has not been announced, it’s really hard to speculate on its credibility. Only time will tell.

Notes:
====

* This version was going to be released in 2 weeks but with recent abuses on morphling/necro,
i decided to just release it now. This doesn’t have as much new content as i had planned,
however, you can expect new content to flow in at a steady rate.

* Lord of Avernus will be looked into in the next few versions to make him less boring.
Morphling adapt will probably get reworked in the near future as well.

* Thanks to the beta testers for their help; switch and minotaar for icons; Terrorblaze for hero
descriptions. Special thanks to mercurial for the new 100% hand drawn loading screen art. He
worked on it for over a month. We almost couldn’t use it, we spent all of thursday evening trying
to properly compress it due to blizzard format issues. A desktop wallpaper version of it is
available at mercurialxen.deviantart.com

PS3 Could Feature Downloadable PSone, PS2 Games

According to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony is thinking about enabling their PS3 with a digital distribution service that will allow users to download PSone and PS2 titles on their PS3, a move that would rival Nintendo’s downloadable back-catalogue plans for the Revolution. “Unnamed sources claim that Sony has been discussing the technical requirements needed to provide this service, and in turn, investigating the possibility of remastering select PS2 games so that latter parts of a game can be streamed over a network while earlier segments are being played. It comes as little surprise that Sony is interested in jumping on the digital distribution bandwagon, but the company will have to overcome some hurdles if the effort is to come to fruition.”

E3 Faq by Gamespot

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Q&A - Oblivion at E3 2005

Producer Todd Howard gives us the latest details on Oblivion, from what’s being shown at E3 to the improvements in the game.
Talk about timing. The last time Microsoft launched a console, Bethesda Softworks delivered the first major role-playing game for it. That game was The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, a sprawling RPG that let you explore a massive continent and follow your own path. Now with Microsoft preparing to deliver the Xbox 360 this year, Bethesda looks to deliver the first major role-playing game for that platform, in the form of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Like before, you’ll get to explore a massive world and follow your own path, but this time, you’ll get to do so with a graphical fidelity that was only dreamed of before. Eye candy aside, there are a lot of gameplay improvements in Oblivion as well, and we caught up with producer Todd Howard for the details being released at E3.

GameSpot: Could you give us an update on Oblivion’s progress? What’s on display at E3?

Todd Howard: We’re in the final phases of development. Most of the content is in the game, and we’re trying to polish it all up. We’ll show off all the major features of the game behind closed doors at E3. It’s a hard game to boil down to a short demo, but I think we’ve got something people will enjoy and hopefully come away with a good idea of what we’re tying to accomplish.

GS: What is the current state of the world of Tamriel in development and production? We know the world will be huge; how much of it is done? What kind of environments will we eventually see beyond the very impressive-looking forests shown in the early screenshots?

TH: The majority of it is built. Actually, the whole thing is built, but we’re going through and doing our “clutter pass.” That’s where we drop in all the stuff, like books, weapons, and thousands of forks and plates. We’re big fans of world clutter. Forest covers about half the game’s space, but even within the forest we have subregions of more tropical-based stuff going up to colder, more conifer-laden areas.

GS: Now that we’re here at E3, what can you tell us about the game’s quest system and overall gameplay direction? How will quests keep players from wandering off the beaten path and potentially losing track of what they’re supposed to do? How will other features, such as the compass, help with this, and how will they be integrated with quests? Will there be a book-style quest log like the one in Morrowind, as well as hand-drawn maps? Or will there be more-streamlined quest logs and in-game maps that can be sorted by area and modified with player notes?

111111.jpg

TH: The game’s quest log is broken up by quest, so you see all your active and completed quests and what you have to accomplish next on that quest. It’s much more like the systems that are becoming common in games like Jade Empire or World of Warcraft. You can select any quest, and for the most part, it will highlight on the map exactly where you need to go to accomplish the next step. This mark is also noted on your compass. Some quests have hidden goals, such as “find the secret cave,” and that would not be marked. So we only mark things we want you to know about. For instance, someone gives you a quest to go to the fighter’s guild. The guild is instantly marked on your compass and the map as your quest target, so you can just walk to it without checking over any directions or maps. For the most part, you can follow quests by just following your compass. Again, many quests have alternate paths and secret parts, where nothing gets marked, and that’s open for you to discover.

GS: Tell us about the advancements in the combat system. We already know that the game will have an overhauled combat system that will be more reactive to player input for attacking and blocking with a shield (rather than relying entirely on skill checks). What can you tell us about the combat, about how different weapons will work? Will they be differentiated based on how they’re swung in battle, as in Morrowind? How will ranged combat with bows and other missile weapons work? And are there new tactics and strategies that will emerge in the game?
TH: Our E3 demo shows all of that quite well. We’ve fully integrated melee, blocking, magic, and stealth combat (bows) into one system. You can easily switch between all three, and it really makes the combat decisions interesting. With just melee, which we spent forever tweaking, you have different moves you can pull off depending on player skill and the weapon you have. We think we have a nice gameplay balance and feel between daggers, swords, axes, and larger two-handed weapons. Each feel very different to use in the game, the same way a pistol, rifle, or rocket launcher does in, say, Half-Life.

22222222.jpg

GS: Are there any details you can disclose about the game’s loot and item systems? Are there plans to let players enchant their own weapons with captured enemies’ souls like in Morrowind, or perhaps through other means, like alchemy? Will the game feature a similar alchemy system that will let players forage for components? Are there any other interesting new crafting features to share?

TH: Yes we have enchanting, alchemy, and the like again. We have always loved those types of things in our games. Especially now with the huge dense forests, alchemy is even more intriguing. We have lots of opportunities to put cool things growing around that you can use.

GS: What can you tell us about the character development system? Is it still a hybrid of both experience levels and advancing character skills? Are characters still defined by their primary skills, rather than by a specific character class? How much variation will different players end up seeing among their final characters?

TH: There are changes, but not as many in this area. I think the skill-based leveling system works very well. It can be repetitive, but it’s fun and rewards you for actually role-playing. We’ve tweaked it, there are different skills and such, and the balance is better, but it will still be a “use-based” system.

33333333.jpg

GS: Are there any new story details you can reveal to us for E3? We understand that the game takes place in Tamriel in the wake of the emperor’s death–an event that allows gates to Oblivion (hell, essentially) to open and allows foul creatures to cross into the world. Can you disclose more information about who the player character is and how the player character will affect the world?

TH: Not at this time; we’re keeping the story details under wraps other than that. I can say that each faction has its own story, which leads to a great resolution in each of them and a true feeling of accomplishment when you rise to the head of a guild.

GS: What can you tell us about the game’s factions? Which of the powerful guilds we’ve seen in Morrowind will make a comeback in Oblivion? How will players interact with the factions–will they be gaining standing within them and eventually opposing others, as in Morrowind? Will there be new consequences or a more-dynamic system that tracks your standing with guilds? Will there be any new benefits for attaining a high rank in a guild, such as access to new areas or quests?

TH: We have a number of guilds, highlighted by the big four: mages, fighters, thieves, and the Dark Brotherhood (the assassin’s guild). We want each guild to basically be its own game, with a complete story, power arc, and major rewards for reaching the top. Standing in one guild does not affect another for the most part. We like players to be able to experience them all, but obviously certain character classes have an easier go of one or another.

GS: Finally, is there anything else you’d like to add about Oblivion?

TH: I hope all the press get a chance to see it at E3 and everyone checks out the new trailer that’s being released. Thanks!

Empire at War: Expansion?

EaW.jpg

A developer’s rumor is floating around the LucasArts Forums that an expansion pack for the Empire at War, a RTS game, is possibly in the making.  I think it’s too soon for an expansion, since Empire at War was only released a few months ago.  After all, more time between an original game and its expansion equals more suspense, and more suspense means more demand.

Xbox360 Camera To Be Released In September

microsoft_camera_xbox.jpg

Xbox Live is soon going to feature video chat through Microsoft’s new gadget, the Xbox Live Vision Cam (XLV), which is available in stores September 19th.  Furthermore, users will be able to personalize their account by having gamertag pictures, and even send pictures to other users.  No price has been announced, but it’s safe to assume that it will be comparable to the price of a regular Xbox 360 controller.

Are you ready for Windows Vista?

vista-ready_old_PC.jpg

Quite recently, Microsoft released the official hardware configuration requirements of their Windows Vista OS (Operating System).  The demands are not unreasonable: a mere 800MHz CPU with 512MB of RAM is considered a “Capable” Vista system, and a 1GHz CPU with 1024MB of RAM is considered a “Premium” Vista system.  However, both the “Capable” and the “Premium” system configurations require a DirectX 9-compatible graphics card.  Other suggested hardware is a 40GB hard drive and DVD capability.

Joystiq advises: “If these specs leave you questioning your PC’s prowess, you can download Microsoft’s Vista Upgrade Advisor, which will help you determine the amount of bells and whistles your current system will support. The real question is, will Vista be gaming-ready? Stay tuned for more details on how the latest Vista beta runs today’s games.”

Latest Battlefield 2142 Screenshots

Battlefield 2142.jpg

Before I tell you where to get these gorgeous screenshots, I feel compelled to inform you of the obvious: that the year that this game purports to be in (2142), is 100 years after 1942, which of course was the height of WWII and the year that the previous Battlefield game took place in.  This begs the question, will EA Games continue to name their expansions in such a pattern?  Will there be a Battlefield 2242, a Battlefield 2342, and a Battlefield 2442?  Will the Battlefield series die with this game?  In any case, the newest Battlefield 2142 screenshots are available at EA Games’ official website, along with a 20 minute gameplay video.

First Issue of Nintendo Power Online

nintendopower.jpg

In 1986, the Nintendo gave birth to the NES.  In 1988, a magazine, Nintendo Power, sprung up to provide coverage of all-that-is-Nintendo.  Just recently, Racket Boy scanned and released the entire first issue of Nintendo Power, an issue which will surely appeal to the nostalgic side in you.  Joystiq sums it up well: “the issue features a preview of Super Mario Bros. 2, a Zelda guide, and a roundup of the three best baseball games of that year, not to mention a slew of cheesy 80’s ads.”

Humorous and Fantastic Quotes

Voltaire once wrote that “a witty saying proves nothing”. Although this is true, they can often convey the thoughts, feelings, or emotions of an individual quite keenly. In the entertainment industry, whether it be music, games, or the movies, quotes are memorable, catchy, and incessant. Just think about how many times we heard “I’m Rick James, bitch” a couple of years ago when the Chappelle Show was at its all-time high. Or the ever-infamous mistranslation in Zero Wing: “all your base are belong to us”.

all your base.jpg

Another great video-game quote comes from Zelda II: The Adventures of Link. In that successful classic, Link encounters the most enigmatic of men: “Error”. Here’s the quote:

i am error.jpg

Besides the many quotes whose popularity fluctuates with the trends of the time, there exist quotes of eternal import. Think Socrates. Think Martin Luther King. Think Confucius. For a site devoted to great quotes, go here.

Joystiq Sheds Light on Burning Crusade Expansion

flyingmount.jpg

The Burning Crusade, the official expansion to Blizzards epic MMORPG World of Warcraft (WoW), is chock-full of long-awaited goodies.  Besides flying mounts and the increased level cap of 70, there’s also plenty of PvP modification:

  • The PvP system is the first big change that our players have been waiting to hear about for a long time. … The first is the arena combat system. You’ll be able to join a team: 2v2, 3v3, or 5v5. There are two different modes you can play: One is called practice mode to hone your skills and the other is competitive mode, which is level 70 only.
  • We also want to get world PvP flowing again in WoW. A lot of players missed it, so every Outlands zone was designed with a major PvP objective in mind, so that’s the second of the big PvP announcements.
  • The third thing is a revamp of the honor system. We’re not going to do away with the honor system, but we’re going to fix many of the flaws with it. The first thing players will really care about is that your honor points will no longer decay. Honor points will now become the like the PvP equivalent of a PvE experience. Honor points are just something you accumulate and then we’ll introduce gear to the game so you can purchase that by spending your honor points.
  • We are actually lowering the raid cap which is now at 40. All the expansion raids will be 25 or less. The reason we are doing this is that we can still make the raids feel epic and difficult, but we just wanted to take some of the logistical headaches out of it. We’re also introducing a 10-man raid, as well.

    Sony To Replace PS3 Controllers

    sixaxis1.jpg

Sony’s PS3 controllers, also called Sixaxis, are wireless, but unfortunately do not feature removable battery packs, which makes them useless after the rechargeable batteries lose their efficiency, common after a finite number of charges.

A Sony spokesman has denied the rumor, saying “This is a purely speculative story and is largely untrue. The latest generation of Lithium Polymer batteries hardly suffer any memory effect at all, so it’ll be many years before there’s any degradation in terms of battery performance.”

Furthermore, Sony has the courage of its convictions, and is willing to replace any controllers, free of charge, when their battery dies.

When and if this happens, then of course we will be providing a service to exchange these items.

The Sixaxis controller will retail in stores for a modest price of $49.99 on the PS3 launch date: November 17th in the US.

Japan PS3 Gets Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection

    untitled.JPG

Japanese PS3 owners recently discovered that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which was essentially a remade version of Tekken 5 with some new characters and modes, was available for download from the Playstation store at no cost.  The big difference in this version of Tekken 5, of course, is that it is High-Def (HD), running in 1080p.  There are many modes in this game, including arcade battle, ghost battle, versus battle, and a gallery for viewing and downloading images and movies.  At 830 megabytes and about $17 in value, Japanese PS3 owners must feel the Sony love.  Can’t wait for this one to come to the US!

    Hot Girl Gamers 2006

Game Lemons came out with a list of Girl Gamers–or girls who run gaming blogs and presumably game as well–and we can’t help but aggregate their top 10 hottest girl gamers into one big picture:

    top-10-girl-gamers.jpg

They’ve updated their original entry to add a list of lesser-known but linkable gamer-babes, so go check it out. Personally, I’ve always thought that to the intense-nerd-gamer, any female gamer would appear very hot…

Sometime next month in Japan, SimCity for the DS will be released!  However, there is no listed release date for the American version, which is a little dissappointing.  Even if all they told us was that they would begin development on such-and-such a date, or were ever planning it in the future, I would be content.  Let’s hope this one isn’t just a Japan-exclusive for the Nintendo DS.  Check out the exquisite screens below:

Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360

    gh2.jpg

Harmonix has recently released details confirming that the 360 version of Guitar Hero will have new tracks, along with a sturdier controller.  Here are the new songs:

    1. “Dead!” - My Chemical Romance (The Black Parade, 2006)
    2. “The Trooper” - Iron Maiden (Piece of Mind, 1983)
    3. “Billion Dollar Babies” - Alice Cooper (Billion Dollar Babies, 1973)
    4. “Hush” - Deep Purple (Shades of Deep Purple, 1968)
    5. “Life Wasted” - Pearl Jam (Pearl Jam, 2006)
    6. “Rock N Roll Hoochie Koo” - Rick Derringer (King Biscuit Flower Hour, 1973)
    7. “Possum Kingdom” - The Toadies (Rubberneck, 1994)
    8. “Salvation” - Rancid (Let’s Go, 1994)

The new controller design is based off of the Gibson X-Plorer, and is supposed to be much sturdier than the PS2 guiter controller.

    Half Life 2: Orange?

    hl2-orange.jpg

That’s right.  Electronic Gaming Monthly has confirmed that Valve’s upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the Half Life 2 bundle have been renamed Half Life 2: Orange!  Joystiq quips: “Valve has come up with an entire world of alien life forms, postmodern physics and government conspiracies and the best title they could come up with is a color? We guess it’s better than Half-Life 2: Head Crab-tacular Edition.”  HL2:O will include the original Half Life 2 game, along with Episodes One and Two, Portal, and Team Fortress.

    Jack Thompson To Sue Microsoft?

    jack_thompson_attorney.jpg

In his letter to Bill Gates, Microsoft is only again abused by anti-game activist Jack Thompson’s latest barrage of threats, threats that stem from an over-zealous confusion of moral value and necessity of legal action.  The game that’s pissing Mr. Thompson this time is Halo 3 for the Xbox 360, a game that he calls “hyperviolent.”  Furthermore, he erroneously alleges that the original Halo was the source of inspiration for Lee Boyd Malvo, the DC Beltway sniper, and that Halo allowed Malvo to become “remarkably efficient” in his killing.  However, JT couldn’t leave his letter as a mere judgment of Halo 3’s content, so he decided to threaten Gates with legal action if it didn’t prevent the sale of it to minors.  Here’s Jack Thompson’s letter in full to Microsoft’s Chairman Bill Gates:

    Bill Gates
    Microsoft Corporation
    Redmond, Washington

    Re: Halo 3

    Dear Mr. Gates:

As you know, the Federal Trade Commission has repeatedly found that games rated “Mature” by the video game industry-captured Entertainment Software Rating Board are routinely sold to kids under the age of 17 despite the age rating. The most recent failure rate of the ratings on “Mature” games, according to the FTC, is 42%. The entire rating system is a fraud, and “broken,” the latter description aptly provided by Senator Hillary Clinton.

As you also know, Lee Boyd Malvo trained on Microsoft’s Halo to further enable him to become the remarkably efficient “DC Beltway Sniper.” That was reported by NBC News at the time and was noted in Malvo’s criminal trial.

You appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes II and rather revealing and usefully noted that “the cool thing about these games is that they transport you to a world you think is real.” Precisely. Capcom has recently disclosed to investors that your video game industry’s violent games, sold to children, pose a real hazard to the health of the industry. Right on.

The hyperviolent Microsoft Xbox 360 game Halo 3 is scheduled by your company for commercial release in September of this year. The Beta version that was released last week shows us all just how violent the game is and how inappropriate it is for play by anyone under 17, as the “Mature” rating it will surely receive indicates.

Here’s the deal, Mr. Gates: Either Microsoft undertakes dramatic, real steps, through its marketing, wholesale, and retail operations to assure that Halo 3 is not sold, via the Internet and in stores, directly to anyone under 17, or I shall proceed to make sure that Microsoft is held to that standard by appropriate legal means. I have done that before successfully as to Best Buy, and I shall do so again as to Microsoft and all retailers of Halo 3.

    Regards, Jack Thompson

I wonder what will come of Mr. Thompson’s latest endeavors.  Will he successfully sue Microsoft for perceived crimes of passivity?  How will he be able to prove Microsoft culpable for the legal violations of retailers who sell its games?  We’ll keep you posted.

    Brazil Bans Counterstrike + Everquest

Joining previous bans of pc games Carmagedon, Grand Theft Auto and Postal which all garnered 18+ “adults only” ratings in Brazil, now first-person shooter Counterstrike and MMORPG Everquest join the ban list. Since 01/17/2008 a federal judge in Goiás has begun confiscating copies of the games, enforcing a ban that was legislated last fall. Other provinces are not seizing the games.

    everquest-css.jpg

Kotaku also reports that Counterstrike “in the vision of specialists, teaches war techniques” and that Everquest “takes the player to total nonsense and heavy psychological conflicts, because the quests he receives may be good or bad.”

More amusingly, Everquest is not even officially sold in Brazil, and the offensive Counterstrike content where “Rio de Janeiro drug dealers kidnap and take to a slum three UN representative s” and “the police invade the place and are welcomed with bullets” refers to a user created map, CS_rio. Lol, it’s ok Brazil, we have politicians like that too in America; they’re called Hillary Clinton.
