This must be one of the most difficult cases of spot-the-difference, because for the life of me I could not see where the Sony PMX-U53 differ from the PMX-U50. As an iteration, the U53 is oddly identical to the original. Like it’s predecessor, the U53 has a 2.4-inch 320 x 240-pixel screen playing AVC (H.264/AVC) MPEG-4, AVI videos. The U53 has identical dimensions (68.3 x 86.4 x 7.1mm) with the U50 and also weighs 70 grams. FM tuner, stereo speakers, USB. Like the U50, the U53 comes in black, white and pink. It even gets the same 999-yuan ($132) pricing for the 1GB. So what makes the U53, the U53? If you understand Chinese, do let us know.

From BOL-LINK (the maker of the Game Boy Micro-like PMP) comes the MP-703, a flash memory-based MP4 player that looks like something you’d carry your lunch with. The product also plays MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA, ASF and WAV files. ID3 tags are supported, for all you fans of mobile karaoke.
The MP-703 also features digital audio recording, five EQ settings, an FM radio and a USB 2.0 port. Firmware is upgradable, and you can set a password-protected folder for all the stuff you’d rather not show other people. Memory capacity ranges from 128MB to 1GB in the usual increments. Shenzhen Wistar is offering the F1 PMP, which comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA screen that allows brightness adjustment and normal/power saving modes (useful for those long trips without a socket in sight). While the product plays only AVI files, it thoughtfully comes with conversion software for noncompatible videos.
Audio-wise, MP3 and WMA formats (with ID3 tags) are supported. Oh, JPEG and TXT files too. The DM-k860 has a USB 2.0 port, and comes with built-in games and seven EQ settings. Dimensions are 82×55x12mm, and weight is 70g. No details on memory capacity, but at least we know it’s flash.
Editor: Oops. Looks like this is no undubbed no-name PMP but the very F1 PMP Thomson has introduced recently and even then re-introduced with a reduced price.

China-based Aigo just dropped the MP5-E898. Though a little short on details, we know that the device handles the RMVB format (for variable bitrate streams) aside from the standard type (RM). Oh, it also does AVIs. All videos are shown on a 3-inch screen capable of 16.7-million colors.
The MP5-E898 has an integrated FM radio, and can do digital sound recording, picture display (no word on format), and e-book functionality. It supports eight languages, including Chinese, English, French and Dutch. Dimensions are currently unknown, in case you were wondering.

In line with the trend for religion-oriented PMPs, the iBible from KingNeed is a video-, audio- and photo-supporting (formats not specified) device equipped with a 3.2-inch touchscreen TFT display. Needless to say, this non-Apple product comes with a whole host of biblical features, as well as a miniSD slot for memory expansion.
The King James and World English versions of the Bible are included. Search via chapter title, verse, or keyword is allowed, and chapters can be bookmarked. A dictionary of biblical terms is included, as is an exam to check your memory-retention skills. The iBible also has PDA functions, such as contacts, calendar, task manager, memos, sketchpad, voice recorder, world clock, e-book reader and calculator. Dimensions are 2.6×4.5×6 inches.
If you’re interested, you can get one for $132.76 (but you’ll have to get at least five units). Salvation is, sadly, not part of the package.

Chinavasion has launched the very game-centric CVASQ-C811 PMP, which has a built-in emulator for Nintendo’s NES, Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Sega’s Mega Drive/Genesis games. It comes with a stand that doubles as a game pad, equipped with a D-pad, seven buttons and two speakers.
For videos (which run at 25fps), the device only supports AVIs, but it ships with software that converts RM, RMVB, WMV, ASF, MPEG, MPEG-4, MPE, DAT and MOV files. Audio-wise, it handles MP3, WMA and WAV formats. JPEG, GIF and BMP images and TXT documents are supported as well.
The CVASQ-C811 has a 3-inch QVGA LTPS TFT LCD with a resolution of 320×240 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio. If the 1GB internal memory seems a bit lacking, you can use the SD slot for cards up to 4GB in capacity. It can record audio as a WAV file, has a USB 2.0 port and is compatible with Windows 98, SE, ME, 2000 and XP, Mac OS X, and Linux 2.4.2.

I have a feeling Blog Tang A+ is going to be a hit. It features a HD storage that maxes out at 160GB. The 4.3-inch LCD screen supports 16.7 million colors and plays high-def videos at an acceptable 30fps or thereabouts. Venus introduces the JXD205 MP4 player featuring a one-hundred per cent steel casing and the overall good looks of LG’s Shine phone sans the mirror finish. Yup, the screen does not blend with the rest of the shiny device when left untouch, nor does it look like a touch screen either but a rather typical 2.4-inch 260k-color QVGA. No keyboard slides out of this baby; instead AV controls are left fully to the slim media controls up front. It measures 83 × 50 × 12mm, plays MPEG-4 (AVI) MP3, WMA and WAV, features 3D surround sound, TF memory extension and FM. For such a shiny gadget, it comes at the small price of 399 yuan ($53) for the 1GB and 499 yuan ($65) for the 2GB.

BTL International’s M1820 may prove to be something of a hard pill to swallow, considering its less-than-spacious 1.8-inch TFT display (with a resolution of 128×160 pixels) and lack of advanced features. But if you could really stand this thing on end (and we doubt you can), maybe that would make up for it.
The device supports AMV videos, and MP3 and WMA audio files. It allows use as an e-book reader and a digital photo album, and has FM radio functionality. Internal flash memory ranges from 128MB to 4GB in capacity. Black and white versions are available (no blue or red pills?).

Beijing Newman Ideal Digital Technology’s MoMo may have a strange name, but it does try to make up for that by working as a map viewer and allowing use as a still, video and web camera. The device supports AVI and 3GP videos, MP3 and WMA audio files (with lyric display), JPEG, GIF, BMP and PNG images, and TXT documents.
The MoMo has a 2.4-inch QVGA TFT LCD (240×320 pixels) and incorporates a 1.3MP camera, a USB 2.0 port and a slot for MicroSD cards. It records video as an AVI, and audio in either WAV or AMR formats through its built-in microphone. The gadget allows you to install NES games to supplement the ones preinstalled. The CMV9301 from Shenzhen Carav Electronics comes with your choice of a 3MP or 5MP camera, both of which are proudly not reached through interpolation. It doesn’t come with its own HDD, though (BYO 1.8-inch drive), but it does support AVI, MOV, MPEG-4 and ASF videos at 640×480 pixels and 30fps. The MS3588 from HK Power is quite an interesting device. Not only does it offer solar and DC charging, it also allows use as a charger for other electronic devices. Yeah, the M2806 from BTL International plays AVI, Xvid and MTV videos, and MP3, WMA, WAV and ADPCM audio files. It’ll even display JPEG, BMP and GIF images. Still, the support for flash (200 “funny games”) and 8-bit FC and NES games is probably the device’s main attraction.
The M2806 can pull double-duty as an e-book reader and an audio (WAV) recorder. It comes with move, and zoom-in and -out capability for images, and has a slot for SD and MMC cards up to 2GB in capacity.

You know that Lenovo isn’t ashamed of its Chinese roots when it comes out with something like the i909 GSM phone. It’s one of those Chinesy gadgets that specialize in adding NES gaming support on aduio/video playback and/or cellphone calling. Honestly, it takes a lot of leaves from this gaming PMP and this one. The game players from Deming has the better form factor, I believe, if you include the game pad in the picture, as the PMP and folds down into the cut-out in the gaming pad provided for it. The Lenovo gaming phone connects to GSM networks, has a 2.4-inch 262K color QVGA TFT screen and a 2.0 megapixel camera built-in. It has PMP capabilities (native 3GP and MP4 support) and without the pad weighs 113 grams. Only the Chinese gets this phone for Christmas for 1220 yuan ($164). Eventually though, some online store will offer the 1909 throughout the world with shipping fees added, so stay tuned.

Cedar Electronics may be marketing its CDV-628 as a videocam with PMP capability, but the device’s looks suggest that the reverse is true (especially when folded). Anyway, the product does MPEG-4 videos and MP3 audio files, and can also take still images.
The CDV-628 has a 1/1.8-inch CMOS sensor, a f8.54mm lens and a resolution of 5.17MP. Display is done on a 2.4-inch TFT LCD with a resolution of 480×234 pixels. Internal memory is from 32MB to 128MB, and can be supplemented by SD or MMC cards up to 2GB in capacity. PictBridge and AV-out capability are included, and a USB 2.0 port is built-in. We’ve been seeing a lot of interesting new products from China lately. They are not what you might call state-of-the-art. In fact, they are entertaining in a way that satisfies what by poet John Keats dubbed as “negative capability.” One of these truly lyrical products is model number YG-625 from Tian Ling Electronics. It looks to me like an aluminum butterfly with buttons and an OLED screen. The internals, though, is a little unprepossessing, even for a simple MP3 player with video support. The screen is a little too small to make movie-viewing fun. It’s got an FM tuner and a voice recorder and these in themselves together with the file support would’ve made any kid happy ten years when he opens his Christmas present, but this product seems to be missing a few details like dimension, weight and battery life. What we do know and sadly report is that this baby still uses CSTN display.

My first impression of this nameless PMP from Shenzhen’s Tian Ling is that it’s a damn good idea. Why doesn’t Dell put its high-end gaming computer brand in charge of its bid for portable media greatness. The erstwhile Apple Computer competitor could truly give the iPod a run for its money especially when you got a welcome screen that looks like the one above after you boot up your Dell-branded PMP. I’m just saying the Chinese get some good ideas from time to time. It doesn’t matter to me if these ideas were acquired accidentally on the way to another rip-off job. Gaming support would be a welcome addition, too.

The W308 from Shenzhen Kinghanwei Science and Technology (what a mouthful) sports an interesting folding design that isn’t so much clamshell as it is lunchbox. Hey, at least you won’t need to buy a screen protector, right? Anyway, the device supports AVI videos, MP3, WMA and WAV audio files (with 3D sound effects) and JPEG images.
The W308 has a two-inch TFT screen that displays 262,000 colors, and a USB 2.0 port that allows use as a mass storage device. E-book player and gaming capability are included. The firmware is upgradeable, too. Internal memory is only 1GB, though, and while the price ranges between $30 and $50, you’ll have to buy at least 1,000 units.

Taipower’s newest PMP is beautiful. Compared to the M25, the M26 is genuine alternative to Apple products in form factor. The M26, which comes in black and white versions, has a 2.6-inch WQVGA touch screen. It plays RMVB / RM / FLV / AVI videos with TV-out functionality. Audio will be enhanced with Microsoft’s PlayFX that features 3D headsets. The Teclast M26 isn’t priced yet, but we are almost certain it won’t cost anywhere near an iPod.
